Perspectives

Cindy Duff

"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Let God show you his perspective on your struggles, and trust him for your future.”

                                                                                                                                    Rom 8:38-39

Have you ever needed a readjustment to your perspective? Sometimes, we experience loss, grief or difficulties, and our perspective becomes negative. That is our natural reaction to hard times. But fortunately, God does not leave us in our natural state! In Psychology we have a truism: “We don’t live with the events of our lives, we live with our interpretation of the events of our lives.” Or as God tells us through the Psalmist, “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” The story we tell ourselves about our life events shapes the kind of person that we become. Do we become anxious or hopeful? Angry or grateful? Vengeful or forgiving? The interpretation of the events of our life is what shapes our character going forward. What we think about shapes who we become. Missionaries and their children often experience difficult events and losses, and they may need someone safe to talk to about these struggles. They need someone to help them gain a new perspective, someone who will keep their struggles confidential. That is what we do. It is our mission and calling. We encourage the missionaries that come to us, using the promises of God. In the same way, I would urge you to memorize and meditate on God’s promises to you. In this way, God can take us out of our natural state of self-pity, anxiety or anger during hard times. Instead, he changes our perspective by reminding us of his love, his providence, and his presence through his promises.
